Viola Shafik is a filmmaker, curator and film scholar.
She is the author of

• Arab Cinema: History and Cultural Identity,1998/2016 (AUC Press), 

• Popular Egyptian Cinema: Gender, Class and Nation, AUC-Press, 2007 (AUC-Press), Revolutionary Filmmaking: Documentary Forms in the Middle East and North Africa (working title, forthcoming Routledge) 

She is also the editor of Documentary Filmmaking in the Middle East and North Africa, 2022 (AUC Press).
She taught at the American University in Cairo, Zürich University, Humboldt University and Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich where she held the position of a researcher 2016-2020.
She served as the Head of Studies of the Documentary Campus MENA Program 2011-2013, curator and consultant for numerous international film festivals and film funds, such as La Biennale di Venezia, the Berlinale, Dubai Film Market, Rawi Screen Writers Lab, Torino Film Lab and the World Cinema Fund.
She directed several documentaries, The Lemon Tree/Shajarat al-Laymun (1993), Planting of Girls/Mawsim zaraa al-banat (1999), Jannat `Ali-Ali im Paradies/My Name is not Ali (2011) and Arij - Scent of Revolution (2014).
Current works in progress are Home Movie on Location and Der Gott in Stücken.

فيولا شفيق

مخرجة أفلام، كاتبة وباحثة في مجال الأفلام. 

قامت بتأليف ما يلي: 

• "السينما العربية: تاريخ وهوية"، ١٩٩٨/٢٠١٦ (طباعة الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة).

• "السينما المصرية الجماهيرية: النوع الإجتماعي، الطبقة والقومية" (طباعة الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة)، ٢٠٠٧.

• جماليات السينما التسجيلية الثورية في الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا (المسمى الوظيفي، دار نشر روتليدج قريباً).

كما أنها محررة "صناعة الأفلام الوثائقية في الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا"، ٢٠٢٢ (طباعة  الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة).

قامت بالتدريس في الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، جامعة زيورخ، جامعة هومبولت، وجامعة لودفيج ماكسيميليان في ميونيخ، حيث شغلت منصب باحثة ما بين ٢٠١٦-٢٠٢٠.

شغلت منصب الإدارة الفنية Documentary Campus للشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا ٢٠١١-٢٠١٣، ومعملت كمستشارة للعديد من المهرجانات السينمائية الدولية وصناديق الأفلام، مثل: La Biennale di Venezia، the Berlinale، سوق دبي السينمائي، راوي لكتابة السيناريو، Torino Film Lab، وصندوق السينما العالمية World Cinema Fund.

أخرجت فيولا عدة أفلام تسجيلية، من بينها: "شجرة الليمون" عام ١٩٩٣، "موسم زرع البنات" عام ١٩٩٩، و"جنة علي/إسمي ليس علي" عام ٢٠١١ و"أريج - رائحة الثورة" عام ٢٠١٤.

Director’s Biography
LeÏla Kilani

Moroccan born in Casablanca in 1970, Leïla Kilani lives between Paris and Tangier.

She first started her studies in Economics (Master Degree in Paris Sorbonne) before studying history. She got a bachelor degree in History – Mediterranean Muslim civilization. She then did a thesis in l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.

Independent Journalist since 1997, she has collaborated with Qantara – the Arabic and Mediterranean magazine which is published by the Arab World Institute.

Beside organising cultural manifestation (especially in Egypt) she headed towards directing documentaries.

نبذة عن المخرجة
ليلي كيلاني

مغربية من مواليد الدار البيضاء عام ١٩٧٠، تعيش بين مدينتي باريس وطنجة. 

قامت بدراسة الاقتصاد في البداية (حاصلة على درجة الماجستير من جامعة السوربون في باريس) قبل دراستها للتاريخ. 

حصلت على البكالوريوس في التاريخ - حضارة البحر الأبيض المتوسط الإسلامية. ثم قامت بعمل أطروحة في كلية الدراسات المتقدمة في العلوم الإجتماعية.

تعاونت مع "قنطرة" - المجلة العربية والمتوسطية التي يقوم بإصدارها معهد العالم العربي- كصحفية مستقلة منذ عام ١٩٩٧.                 توجهت نحو إخراج الأفلام الوثائقية، إلى جانب قيامها بتنظيم الفعاليات الثقافية (خاصة في مصر).
