Film Synopsis
Fertility has always remained a miracle.
Filmmaker Aliona van der Horst followed the unconventional Dutch-Japanese pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama who made a remarkable work of art on the theme of infertility. She created a cathedral-like space out of thousands of white dresses in which visitors, as in a ritual, roamed around and fell silent. Subsequently, the filmmaker explored Buddhist rituals of fertility and its transience. For example, the moving ritual of the ‘water children’ for premature babies, for stillborns, for babies that were never born.
In the film, the sound of Bach’s Goldberg variations, magically and sensually interpreted by Tomoko Mukaiyama, lifts the individual stories to the universal in a subtle manner.

Director’s Biography
Dutch/Russian director Aliona Van Der Horst has directed seven international award-winning feature documentaries. In many of her films, art and artists play an essential role. Her films are meticulously crafted, paying a lot of attention to style, sound and rhythm, which makes them close to being a work of art on their own. Her films about Russia deal with how big historical events shape the fates of generations. Along with five fellow filmmakers, she set up the collective Docmakers. Her latest film “Love is Potatoes” (2017) won a number of awards, including the Golden Calf (Dutch Oscar) and was a success in arthouse cinemas. Her film Water Children (2011) Grand Prix Doxa Vancouver.
